In Azerbaijan, opposition decides to nominate additional presidential candidate

The decision to nominate an additional united candidate for the presidency in Azerbaijan was adopted on August 19 by the members of the oppositional National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF).

Let us remind you that the screenwriter Rustam Ibragimbekov, the Chairman of the NCDF, was nominated as the presidential candidate.

Currently, Ibragimbekov is outside Azerbaijan. In early July, he officially appealed to the authorities of the Russian Federation asking to terminate his Russian citizenship, but he has not yet received a response. According to the Constitution of Azerbaijan, the President cannot have dual citizenship.

The session, held without journalists, discussed the further electoral tactics of the NCDF. The audience was unanimous on the need to support Ibragimbekov until all the possibilities for registration are exhausted, Eldar Namazov, the chief of staff of the NCDF and the leader of the political movement EL (People), said at a briefing after the session.

However, according to Eldar Namazov, opinions of the participants diverged on the issue of the "backup variant".

In the end, by a margin of one vote, the members of the NCDF spoke in favour of nominating an additional united candidate. In the coming days another session of the Council will be held to nominate a particular person, said Namazov.
