In Dagestan, detained Sabina Abakarova complains about being beaten in SIZO, FSIN Department denies everything

On August 2, Sabina Abakarova, suspected of illegal possession of arms, was beaten at the SIZO (pre-trial prison) No. 1 of Makhachkala. This was reported by the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" for Dagestan. Advocate of Sabina Abakarova also confirmed the information about the beating. The Department of the Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN) denies the fact of beating and reports that a verbal altercation occurred between Sabina Abakarova and a SIZO staff member.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 7, law enforcers reported finding two "shahid belts" in the houses in Makhachkala. Relatives of the young women argued that the "shahid belts" were planted.

According to the version of Sabina Abakarova, on August 2, after the inspection in the cell, she refused to let taking her blood sample. According to the Sabina Abakarova's story, after her refusal, she was brought to one of the offices of operating staff members, where a SIZO staff member began to insult and then beat her.

Gasan Aigunov, Chairman of the Public Monitoring Commission for implementation of public control over human rights in places of citizens' detention (PMC) for Dagestan, has noted that on August 3, he visited Sabina Abakarova and "did not see any signs of blows on the Sabina's face."

"On August 2, her cell was searched, and she tried to stop the search. Because of that fact, a verbal altercation occurred between her and Daud Daudov, Deputy Chief of the SIZO. However, no beating took place," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was assured by Amirkhan Gasanov, a staff member of the press service of the FSIN Department for the Republic of Dagestan.
