US calls on Azerbaijani authorities to ensure democratic presidential election

The USA urges the Azerbaijan's authorities to ensure the conditions for free and fair presidential election. This is declared in the statement made by Richard Morningstar, US Ambassador in Baku, on August 5 to mark the official start of the election campaign for the election of the President of Azerbaijan, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

"Taking into account the start of the active phase of the election season, we call on the government of Azerbaijan to ensure a free and fair electoral process that reflects the will of the people," Richard Morningstar has stated.

The US Ambassador has emphasized that the concept of free and fair election is not only limited to the events of the voting day.

"To form an impartial pre-election atmosphere, it is necessary to ensure equal access of all political parties and groups concerned to the media and to create opportunities for free conduction of the election campaign," Richard Morningstar has emphasized.

The US Ambassador urged to speed up the investigation into the cases and the trials against political leaders Ilgar Mamedov and Tofiq Yagublu, activists of youth organizations and journalists and to make transparent and fair judgments.
