New Kuban Ombudsman elected without alternative candidates

The Legislative Assembly of the Krasnodar Territory has approved Sergey Myshak, a former staff member of the regional administration, on the position of Ombudsman. "There were no candidates at all. There was only one candidate Sergey Myshak. Other candidates were not even considered," Alex Todorenko has commented on the situation.

"Sergey Myshak is a person who can bring together a group of like-minded people around him. He will have chances not to bring problems to federal agencies, but not by independent solution - by silencing them in the media and the public field. Circumstances like in Kuschevskaya or Krymsk could arise, and the reports would represent the situation as 'everything is calm' and 'everything is alright'," Alexei Todorenko predicts.

Tatiana Rudakova, Chairperson of the public organization "Mothers to protect rights of detainees, persons under investigation, prisoners", has also expressed her criticism towards the candidacy of Sergey Myshakov.

"Ombudsman shall be a person who had earlier distinguished himself or herself in the field of human rights protection. As far as I know, Mr Myshak was not engaged in human rights protection. The society was not even asked to express its opinion when he was appointed to the position," the "Novaya Gazeta" quotes Tatiana Rudakova as saying.
