Hunger strike at "Promzhilbaza" suspended

At the temporary accommodation centre (TAC) "Promzhilbaza" in the city of Karabulak, hunger-strikers have temporarily stopped their protest action after on July 6 they were visited by Yunus-Bek Evkurov, Acting Head of Ingushetia, who promised them that the problems of each participant of the protest action would be considered on an individual basis.

According to the decision of the Karabulak City Court, 35 residents of the TAC "Promzhilbaza" are to be evicted. The TAC "Promzhilbaza" accommodates internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Chechnya and North Ossetia and natives of the republics, who did not receive refugee status. On July 1, ten local residents went on hunger strike, demanding to issue housing certificates to all the families of immigrants living in the TAC.

"Yunus-Bek Bamatgereevich has noted that Ingushetia alone will not be able to resolve the housing problem of IDPs, since the republic has not enough financial resources and, therefore, neighbouring Chechnya should be necessarily involved in resolving the problem. He has said that he will establish a commission of officials ad agencies concerned that will address the problem of each of us on an individual basis," the "Caucasian Knot" was told by Malika Chakkhieva, one of the participants of the hunger strike.

The woman has noted that the leader of the republic undertook to primarily solve "the housing problem of IDPs from North Ossetia; and as far as Chechen women who left the neighbouring republic during the armed conflict are concerned, he has advised to contact the responsible authorities of Chechnya."
