No less than 41 people detained during an action of protest in Baku

A confrontation between participants of an unauthorized protest action in support of residents of Ismailly and the police in the centre of Baku resulted in mass detentions of the participants. The names of 41 detainees are known.

Groups of activists numbering 200 to 250 people all in all chanted slogans: “Ismailly revolted, Baku is its support”, “People of Ismailly defended their honour”, “We support Ismailly, we are all people of Ismailly!”, “Take away arms!”, “Resign!”, “Freedom!”.

The police dispersed the protesters using rubber clubs. 41 detainees have been reported as of the moment. “Azadlyg” newspaper published a preliminary list of names. There are 13 women among those detained.

Head of Legal education association Intigam Aliev, Head of Nakhichevan regional Resource centre of democracy and NGOs Malakhat Nasibova, her husband, human rights activist and journalist Ilgar Nasibov, journalists Hadidja Ismailova, Shahveled Chobanoglu, bloggers Emin Milly and Zaur Gurbanly were detained.

Activists of National Front and “Musavat” parties, Civil Solidarity party, youth movement “Nida” (“Exclamation”) and youth civil movement “Republican Alternative” were also delivered to the police.

Press Service of the Ministry of Interior Affairs refused to specify the exact number of detainees only saying that the action was suppressed because in was not authorized by the municipal authorities.
