Georgia Government suggested to pay higher compensations to the families of servicemen perished in Afghanistan

The Government of Georgia suggested to the Parliament to raise the sum of compensation to the families of servicemen who perished in Afghanistan up to $60,000. The “Caucasian Knot” correspondent received this news from the Press Service of the Ministry of Defense of Georgia.

Earlier, the “Caucasian Knot” reported that in the evening of June, 6, a suicide bomber blasted a car with an explosive on the base of the Georgian unit of International Security Assistance Force ISAF in Afghanistan. Seven Georgian servicemen were killed and nine got wounded.

“At present, according to the legislation, the compensation sum makes 15,000 lari ($9500). However, after the death of seven servicemen in Gilmend the Ministry of Defense decided that the sum was too small. Therefore, we suggested to increase the compensation sums up to 100,000 lari which makes about $60,000”, a representative of Press Service of the Ministry of Defense said.

It should be reminded that Georgia has participated in the operation in Afghanistan since 2009. During this period 29 Georgian servicemen perished. 1570 servicemen are staying in Afghanistan at present. According to the Ministry of Defense, Georgia bears all the maintenance costs of the Georgian servicemen: wages, military equipment, food, ammunition and compensations for wounding and death.
