Moscow City Court dismisses defence's appeal to reconsider verdict in case of riots in Manezh Square

On January 9, Olga Egorova, Chairman of the Moscow City Court, dismissed the appeal filed by the defence of the sentenced man against the verdict to Igor Berezyuk sentenced by the Tver District Court of Moscow for riots in Manezh Square that occurred in December 2010.

On December 11, 2010, more than 5000 football fans and nationalists raised riots in Manezh Square after the march held in memory of Yegor Sviridov, a fan of the "Spartak" FC, who was killed in the fight at night on December 6. According to the information of the Moscow authorities, as a result of the riots 32 persons suffered.

On October 28, 2011, the Tver District Court of Moscow sentenced the defendants in the case of the riots in Manezh Square to 2-5.5 years of imprisonment. On March 29, the Moscow City Court mitigated the punishment to some convicts. For Igor Berezyuk, the term of imprisonment was reduced by three months, and thus, Igor Berezyuk was sentenced to 5 years and 3 months of imprisonment to be served in a common security colony.

At the supervisory authority, the defence of Igor Berezyuk requested to reconsider the verdict pronounced by the Tver Court of Moscow and insisted on his release from prison by limiting the sentenced by the term of imprisonment that he had already served.
