Oppositional "Republic" Party refuses to run for presidency in Armenia

Aram Sargsyan, the leader of the oppositional "Republic" Party and a former member of the "Armenian National Congress" (ANC), said he would not run for the post of the country's president. Today, the congress of the party has decided to refuse to participate in the presidential election in Armenia.

Aram Sargsyan asked pardon from those party members, who had considered the participation in the presidential race necessary. "I hope that you don't regard my refusal as manifestation of lack of will. In my deep opinion, the upcoming presidential election will have no qualitative difference from the previous one. On February 18 next year, the current authorities will have their last election," Mr Sargsyan said to the congress.

The leader of the "Republic" Party has promised that on the following day after the presidential election the party will start taking active part in all political processes. "Everything starts on February 19; then, we'll need the full potential of our party," he explained.
