Hungary opens memorial to victims of Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Empire

In the city of Szeged in southern Hungary, in the park of the Cathedral, a memorial to the victims of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire was opened. The memorial represents a khachkar (a stone cross), and its opening was welcomed by Levon Sargsyan, Goodwill Ambassador of Armenia, and Janos Martonyi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary.

The memorial was opened on April 20, several days prior to April 24, when the Day of memory of victims of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Empire is marked annually.

The memorial in Hungary was opened by Levon Sargsyan, Goodwill Ambassador, the brother of Serzh Sargsyan, President of Armenia.

He has emphasized that the events to pay tribute to memory of 1915 are very important for Armenians. "We should remember about 1.5 million of killed persons, and we should fight for that this would never happen again," the PanARMENIAN.NET quotes Levon Sargsyan as saying.

In his letter to the participants of the opening ceremony of the memorial, Janos Martonyi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, has noted the centuries-old friendship between the Armenian and Hungarian peoples and the role of the Armenian community of Hungary.

"Despite the cessation of political relations, Hungary supports the initiative of Armenia in integration with the EU, and it will greet the signing of agreements on association and establishment of the deep and comprehensive trade zone at the summit in Vilnius as part of the EU Eastern Partnership," the "Armenpress" quotes the Janos Martonyi's message with reference to the Hungarian newspaper "Politics".
