In Georgia, "Society of Irakli II" holds action in support of political prisoners

The action, held by the public organization "Society of Irakli II" in front of the palace of the Georgian President, was attended by 20 persons. They came with posters reading: "Release Political Prisoners" and "Cancel Law on Occupation", the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

"We want the Georgian President to release political prisoners tomorrow, on the anniversary of the Rose Revolution. He has the right to sign a decree on pardon, and he simply must release political prisoners and those persons, who were convicted for crossing the border," said Archil Chkoidze, the leader of the organization "Society of Irakli II".

Meanwhile, none of the participants of the action, held in front of the presidential palace, mentioned the names of persons, who should be considered political prisoners. "There are many political prisoners in Georgia. For example, there was the 'Justice' Party, whose members were convicted of a putsch attempt. Some of them have already been released; however, some are still kept in prison," stated George Kushitashvili, a participant of the action.

"Of course, those people will be released after the consideration of the Commission; however, the President can release them by his decree already tomorrow," Archil Chkoidze said.

At the office of the "Free Georgia" Party, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was presented a list of 189 persons, who, according to members of the political party, were imprisoned unlawfully. Meanwhile, the list of the total number of prisoners does not identify those persons, who were arrested and convicted for crossing the border between Russia and Georgia through the Psou checkpoint in Abkhazia and the Roki checkpoint in South Ossetia.
