A Festival of a “wrong” film started in Sochi

On November, 8, a Festival of a “wrong” film first opened in Sochi. Six foreign films shot during several last years were included into the program of the festival: “Under sugar powder”, “Lamb wandering”, “Taste of the Mediterranean”, “Chicken with prunes”, “Vampire woman vs. Frankenstein”, “I am not Harry Jenson”.

The organizers of the festival position it as one of the most significant cultural events and “geographically the greatest film action in Russia” for tens of the towns and cities of the country over a period of many years.

The organizers of the festival explain the choice of pictures by their desire to show the audience films “shot with love for the original creative concept, not the budget of silicone beauties”. They emphasize that all the films will be showing in the cinemas for the first time. However, there is not a single domestic picture in the program of the festival.

Coordinator of the festival Olga Egorova says that the choice of films was based on prizes of different festivals and estimation of film critics.

“Why “wrong” films? They are wrong from the point of view of the present-day standards when blockbusters take the upper positions in cinema cash. These are films that make one meditate, shot first of all out of love for art, not money. The producer had one of the two goals: either shoot a film making the audience think or show some of his or her art discoveries, some interesting innovative concepts and present them in an unconventional manner”, Olga Egorova said to the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.

As a result, according to her, the spectator must gain a comprehension of the difference between films like these and standard pictures shown, in particular, in the cinemas of Sochi.

“While in Moscow and Petersburg there are cinemas specializing in art film there is no such alternative in Sochi. In this respect the project is a cultural one for Sochi, it lets one know what else there exists except Hollywood standards”, Olga Egorova says.

The organizers emphasize cultural and educational goals of the project and state that it is a non-commercial one. However, entrance is paid. The festival in Sochi will last till November, 13.
