ECtHR accepts complaint of Levon Ter-Petrosyan related to events of March 1, 2008, in Yerevan

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has accepted for consideration the complaint, filed by Levon Ter-Petrosyan, First President and the leader of the opposition Armenian National Congress. The complaint demands to recognize that on March 1, 2008, the Armenian authorities violated the rights to personal liberty, freedom of movement and freedom of peaceful demonstrations.

On March 1-2, 2008, as a result of mass riots in Yerevan, 131 persons were injured and 10 persons perished.

The ECtHR has accepted the complaint of Levon Ter-Petrosyan only partially and dismissed the part of the complaint, related to violation of the right to freedom of expression and freedom of choice. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent at the press service of the Armenian National Congress.

Lawyer Vage Grigoryan, the representative of Levon Ter-Petrosyan, stated that partial acceptance of the complaint by the ECtHR is a normal practice and that he did not see anything extraordinary in the fact that the ECtHR dismissed the part of the complaint of Levon Ter-Petrosyan.

As part of the examination of the complaint, the ECtHR sent a request to the Armenian Government.

The Armenian Government has undertaken to respond to the ECtHR's questions till November 7.
