South Ossetian authorities restore village infrastructure on border with Georgia

The dwelling settlement of Sinagur of the Dzau District of South Ossetia, which is located on the border with Georgia and which is a home for mixed Georgian-Ossetian population, has restored the general education school, built a bridge and a medical centre, which were absent there since the end of the 1992 war.

During the rainy season, it is difficult to get to the village of Sinagur because of thick mud. The village is mostly inhabited by the elderly people, and young people left the village long ago because of the absence of prospects and normal living conditions.

After a recent visit of the village of Sinagur by the President of South Ossetia, the dilapidated school building has been restored, where many children came on foot from two-kilometre distance.

According to Arkady Bestaev, Principal of the school, the school building fell into disrepair long ago; however, no one bothered to restore it. According to the Principal, the classes took place under a leaking roof.

Teacher Bella Djabieva hopes that the renovated school will be attended also by children from other nearby villages, since the number of pupils at the Sinagur school is not large. "In this academic year, two kids entered the first form at our school. The second form includes three pupils, and the fourth form five children. I hope, the renovated school building will be also attended by children from other villages, who did not come to us because of poor state of the building," the teacher says.

At the school, unlike at other South Ossetian village schools, schoolchildren study the Georgian language.
