Nazran

Rayon (sector) centre in Ingushetia, 1,916 km south-south-east of Moscow. Located at the west of the Chechen foothill plain. Railway station in the Rostov-on-Don - Baku line. Highway (Rostov-on-Don - Baku). Population (1992 est.) 19.4 thousand.

The city was formed in 1967 from s large Ingush village. In the 1992-2000s, Nazran was the capital of the Republic of Ingushetia.

By the beginning of the 1990s, the city operated the Elektroinstrument factory, manufacturing power drills, a knitting mill, a mill house, etc.

In the middle of the 1990s, Nazran was the centre of the Ingushetia free economic zone; nevertheless, this was the period of recession and many enterprises stopped existing.

The knitting mill in Nazran has been stopped, its shops housing the city market.

The Elektroinstrument factory (belonging to the BIN Association) reinstated its operation in 2000, branching out into new activities, production of consumer goods. The Teymakh clothes factory is functioning. A brickworks has been built.

In the 1990s, the city grew considerably and actually ran into neighbouring villages located on the banks of the Sunzha River. Appearance of the city has changed: the Assa Hotel, the telecentre, the settlement of Targim were built on the shore of the man-made lake. Intensive individual construction is going on.

  • SC demands from KBSU documents on legality of Khokonov's dismissal

    The Supreme Court (SC) of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) has begun considering the lawsuit lodged by Murat Khokonov, Professor of the Kabardino-Balkarian State University (KBSU), concerning his illegal dismissal. The SC has demanded from KBSU bosses the documents confirming the legality of professor's dismissal.
