In Kutaisi, journalists hold solidarity action with prisoners

Today, in front of the Kutaisi prison No. 2, local journalists and NGO activists held an action in solidarity with prisoners.

The "Caucasian Knot" reported that on September 27, in Georgia, in the case on torture of prisoners, four staff members of the Kutaisi prison were detained. Today, on the same case, two other staff members of the prison were detained.

Participants of the protest action wrote a letter to Georgy Tugushi, Minister of Corrections. In their letter, they asked him to allow them to assess the situation in the Kutaisi and Geguti prisons (West Georgia).

"We are to see with our own eyes what was going on there and in what condition our prisoners are. Especially after the fact that on September 27, it was reported that two staff members of the prison were detained," said Nugzar Kokhreidze, the leader of the intellectual club "Dialogue of Generations". Today, the letter was sent to the Ministry.

On September 27, actors of the Kutaisi Theatre named after Lado Meskhishvili also tried to hold an action in solidarity with prisoners. "Prior to a performance, we wanted to address our audience. We wanted to express our support to prisoners and to say that we were shocked by the videos, disseminated by the media. However, the light in the theatre was suddenly turned off," said today Georgy Sikharulidze, the head of the theatre.

As a result, the actors addressed the audience not from the stage, but from the area near the exit of the theatre. Honoured actress Marika Samanishvili, actors Giorgi Zanguri, David Roinishvili and Giorgi Shalamberidze condemned the facts of torture of prisoners and the deterioration of the situation in the country, the "Georgia Online" reports.

Opening of the season at the theatre has been postponed and it will be conducted after the elections and stabilization of the situation in the country. Today, Sikharulidze waived his deputy mandate in the city Sacrebulo and stated that he did not belong to any party anymore, the "News.ge" reports.
