Hungary expressed protest to Azerbaijan because of pardon to Safarov

On September, 2, Zholt Nemet, State Secretary of the Ministry of Interior Affairs of Hungary, lodged a note of protest to the Ambassador of Azerbaijan in Budapest expressing dissatisfaction with the judgment of pardon to Ramil Safarov who killed an Armenian officer in 2004.

The Ministry of Interior Affairs of Hungary considers the verdict of pardon to Safarov sentenced to life imprisonment unacceptable, an official statement of the office runs.

Besides, Hungary blames Azerbaijan for violation of the agreements achieved before according to which Safarov had to continue serving his penalty term in his Motherland and could receive the right of early release only 25 years after the beginning of serving his penalty, RIA "Novosti" reports.

Earlier, representative the Ministry of Justice of Hungary Orsolya Horvath explained that Budapest was guided by Strasbourg Convention Relating to extradition of convicts and proceeded from the assumption that Safarov would stay in prison until the end of his custody term.

Representatives of official Baku considered that they acted in accordance with the law. "Ramil Safarov was pardoned in accordance with the Constitution and laws of Azerbaijan taking into consideration the Convention Relating to extradition of convicts, Faud Aleskerov, Head of Department of work with law enforcement bodies with the Administration of the President of Azerbaijan, explained. - The Convention stipulates the right of each party to enact pardon, amnesty or reduce a penalty in accordance with the Constitution and other legal acts in force".
