Residents of Sochi blocked the traffic along the sidewalks in Chaikovskiy street

On July, 30, 15 activists in Sochi blocked the traffic along the sidewalks in Chaikovskiy and Novoselov streets used by the builders for transporting cargo.

According to residents of the district, after the builders of an Olympic object, i.e. a relief road in Kurortny prospect, blocked Chaikovskiy street all the freight and passenger vehicles started using domestic roads.

“The worst thing is that vehicles move along the sidewalks meant only for pedestrians, too. I am afraid to take my children to the sidewalks near the house where the cars are just rushing around in dense traffic”, Olga Serova, resident of the micro-district and participant of the action, said.

The drivers can use Gagarin street but there are awful traffic jams there and they prefer driving along the sidewalks, participant of the action Sergey Filippov declared.

“We decided to come out in protest to let the negligent drivers know that they were violating our rights. If the authorities are unable or do not want to protect the citizens’ rights we do it by ourselves for it is impossible to stand such a mess in the city any longer”, the participant of the action expressed his point of view.

“For two hours we were blocking the passageway with our bodies and did not let about one hundred cars pass along the sidewalk for pedestrians. All the drivers were indignant but had to go into reverse and come down from the sidewalk”, resident of one of the houses in Chaikovskiy street Irina Khlopova said.

It is currently impossible to open traffic in Chaikovskiy street, Alexey Tsekov, site manager of “Mostootryad-99”, explained, in his turn. “Dangerous works on setting runways are now in process which may cause accidents”, Alexey Tsekov said.
