Armenia: prosecutor demands six years in prison for ANC activist

In Armenia, at today's court session, the public prosecutor Akop Martirosyan demanded to sentence Tigran Arakelyan, an activist of the oppositional Armenian National Congress (ANC) to six years of imprisonment.

On August 9, 2011, seven young activists of the ANC, including Tigran Arakelyan, were detained. On August 12 three of them were released under recognizance not to leave; and on August 19 the court decided to release three more activists; however, a petition to release Tigran Arakelyan was rejected.

Today, the prosecutor Akop Martirosyan has announced the indictment against the ANC activists. Tigran Arakelyan is accused of disorderly conduct, resisting a representative of power, use of violence non-threatening and threatening to the life or health of a policeman in connection with performance by the latter of his official duties, the "ArmeniaToday" reports.

The prosecutor has demanded to sentence Tigran Arakelyan to six years in prison. Also, the prosecution asked to sentence Artak Karapetyan, another ANC activist, to 3.5 years of imprisonment, and Sargis Gevorgyan – to 2 years in prison. As to David Kiramidjanyan, the prosecutor offered a suspended sentence, the "TV Company A1+" reports.
