Experts in Karachay-Cherkessia started compulsory avalanche descent

This morning an avalanche protection group in Karachay-Cherkessia started compulsory descent of snow slides in a ski resort of Dombai, commander of the group Ramazan Abazaliev reported.

Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reported that the members of the group were preparing to start the compulsory descent of snow slides when the weather improved. During the past two days there was a heavy snowfall in the area of Dombai which damaged the power lines.

According to Abazaliev, the works on avalanche descent in the area of the slopes Mussa-Achitara and Semenov-Bashi started at 9.05. "Works on compulsory avalanche descent in one of the most avalanche hazardous spots, i.e. in Cherkessk-Dombai federal highway, near the entrance to the settlement, are combined with works on undermining the rock near the Ulu-Muruju river carried out by members of a demolition squad for broadening the highway", Abazaliev said.

Ramazam Abazaliev warned that traffic in Cherkessk-Dombai highway would be blocked for several hours. Functioning of the cable-cars will also be temporarily held up, RIA "Novosti" reports.

"The management of all the cable-car lines were warned of the operations planned for today. In its turn, Dombai search-and-rescue unit is ready to respond to any possible emergency situation", Abazaliev said.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports that there are all in all 19 avalanche-type centers in the territory of Karachay-Cherkessia two of which are located in Zelenchuk district and the rest in Karachay district of the republic.

It should be reminded that the power engineering specialists accomplished repair-and-renewal operations on reapplication of power in Dombai resort by the evening of January, 18.
