Georgia's President pardons 114 convicts by New Year

On the eve of the New Year, President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili pardoned 114 inmates convicted for committing various crimes. Journalists were told today about it by Khatuna Kalmakhelidze, the head of the Ministry for Corrections, Probation and Legal Aid.

The sitting of the Pardon Commission was held at the presidential administration on December 25 and lasted for several hours.

Then, the materials and recommendations for pardoning were passed over to the president for approval, the TV Channel "PIK". Mikhail Saakashvili decided to pardon 114 convicts by the New Year.

According to Minister Kalmakhelidze, within the next hours 75 prisoners will leave Georgian jails; 13 prisoners have their terms halved. Besides, conditional sentences were removed from 26 prisoners, the "Interfax" reports.
