Film about Garun Kurbanov presented in Dagestan

On December 29, the RGVK "Dagestan" TV Channel presented a film-essay made by journalist Dmitry Aselderov "Citizen of One Epoch", dedicated to Garun Kurbanov, the head of the department for information policy of the presidential press service, who was killed this summer,

Let us remind you that Garun Kurbanov was killed on July 28 at 8:15 a.m. in Montashev Street in Makhachkala. Unidentified criminals shelled the official's Toyota Camry car, when he left home and headed to the car. Kurbanov and his driver were shot dead. On December 22, a street of Makhachkala was named after Garun Kurbanov.

The author of the film said that the idea emerged soon after Kurbanov's murder, but the work took four months. "This is a retrospective story about the man who did much for Dagestan, the father-founder of the RGVK," said Dmitry Aselderov.

According to his story, the film "did not raise any versions of who could stand behind this highly resonant murder." "In creating the film, the staff of the TV channel was involved, Garun Kurbanov's relatives, who shared their archival photographs; and a special place in the film belongs to memories of Garun's father - Magomed Kurbanov, the editor-in-chief of the socio-political magazine 'Peoples of Dagestan'," said the journalist.

Ali Kamalov, the chairman of the Union of Journalists of Dagestan, has noted that Kurbanov was notable among others for his honesty and amazing organizational skills. "He covered a complicated way from an ordinary teacher to the minister. All the way this man met a lot of people, quite different ones, of different professions and social status; and after listening to the end to each of them, he was not afraid to express his opinion. That courage was present in his speeches - he began his hard work, the work of ideological struggle; however, he was not allowed to complete it," said Kamalov, adding that Kurbanov held a special place in the sphere of ideology; he was "its flagship". According to his story, this place remains vacant.

As reported by the RGVK, on December 26, on the eve of presentation of the film, the National Library named after Rasul Gamzatov held the first sitting of the philosophical and literary club named after Garun Kurbanov.

The reason for killing Garun Kurbanov, the head of the department of information policy of the President of Dagestan, was, most probably, his uncompromising stand against extremists - this is the common viewpoint of the official investigation and many public figures of the republic.

However, the editor-in-chief of the Dagestani weekly "Novoe Delo" (New Business) Marco Shakhbanov does not exclude that Kurbanov could fall victim of rivalry for the post, while Abbas Kebedov, a co-chair of the public movement "Dagestan - Territory of Peace and Accord" believes that Kurbanov's murder was directed against the head of the republic.
