A case of ex-Chief of Traffic Police of Armenia accused of embezzlement referred to court

The case of Margar Oganyan, ex-Chief of Traffic Police of Armenia, accused of abuse of authority and fund embezzlement on an especially large scale was referred to court. This information came from Prosecutor General's of Armenia.

Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" reported that Margar Oganyan was detained on August, 29, for suspicion of abuse of authority and misappropriation of property on an especially large scale. On September, 1, he was discharged from the office of Chief of Traffic Police of Armenia. On September, 3, charges of abuse of authority and embezzlement on an especially large scale were brought against him.

"According to the evidence collected during preliminary inquiry, throughout the whole period of his criminal activities Margar Oganyan and two of his subordinates inflicted a damage on the state to a sum of 217,6 million drams (568 thousand dollars), 198 million drams (515 thousand dollars) out of which were returned in process of preliminary inquiry", "Novosti-Armenia" quotes a report of Public prosecutor's office.

Oganyan's attorney Voskanyan informed referring to "Aikakan Zhamanak" ("Armenia Today") that Oganyan had transferred 57 million drams (148,5 thousand dollars) to the state budget.

The attorney said however that it did not mean that Oganyan acknowledged himself guilty. "It is just a matter of honour. The incident took place in the institution he had managed", Voskanyan said.

In reply to the question where Margar Oganyan took such a big sum of money from the attorney said that the money was collected by his family and friends.
