Human rights activists in Armenia are indignant over the sentence upon Ales Beliatsky

Human rights activists from Helsinki Association of Armenia demand repeal of the sentence upon Leader of “Vesna” (“Spring”) Human rights center Ales Beliatsky sentenced to 4,5 years of colony and sequestration of property by Byelorussian court.

The trial on the case of Ales Beliatsky accused of tax evasion drew a wide public response in many countries. In particular, Beliatsky’s arrest was condemned by activists of Azerbaijani civil community. Mickhael Danielyan, Chairman of Helsinki Association of Armenia, called Beliatsky’s arrest a “game of politics”. For integration of actions of solidarity with Beliatsky organized by human rights activists the world over FIDH opened a trilingual web-site “Freedom to Ales Beliatsky!”.

According to the judgment of the court of Minsk, Ales Beliatsky will have to spend 4,5 years in a strict regime colony. The property registered both on his own name, including the office of “Vesna” Human rights center, and other persons will be confiscated for execution of the sentence.

Dmitry Laevsky, Beliatsky’s attorney, refused to comment on the verdict but declared that it would be appealed against by all means, web-site of International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) reports.

Leaders of diplomatic missions of the USA, France, Hungary and Germany, human rights activists from Belarus, Russia and France came to support Ales Beliatsky.

Today human rights activists from Helsinki Association of Armenia during an action in front of the Embassy of Belarus in Armenia will demand Beliatsky’s release and ceasing criminal prosecution. Actions of protest will also be held in Ukraine, Russia and Kirgizia.

The action in Armenia will go under the slogans “Freedom to Ales Beliatsky!”, “For the sake of our and your freedom!”, “Freedom to political prisoners!”, "PanArmenian" reports.
