Religious leader shot dead in Dagestan

Tonight, in the village of Khurig, Tabasaran District of Dagestan, unidentified criminals killed Sirazhutdin Khurigsky (Israfilov), a well-known Dagestani religious leader. This was reported by a source in the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of the republic.

According to Khurigsky's brother, at about 6 in the afternoon two men in camouflage entered the yard of the sheikh's house and shot the religious leader dead.

This information was confirmed by law enforcement bodies. "Two unidentified man in Tabasaran District of Dagestan shot dead the local religious leader Sirazhutdin Israfilov," the source said.

An investigatory team is now studying the crime scene trying to clarify the details of the incident, the RIA "Novosti" reports.

According to various sources, Sirazhutdin Khurigsky had some 5-10 thousand followers (Murids). He was an Imam of a large mosque in the city of Derbent and headed the Islamic University.
