North Ossetia holds ecological action "Protect!"

On October, the Youth Tourist Club, pupils of the orphanage "Victoria", senior schoolchildren of the Vladikavkaz Secondary School No. 24 and volunteers of the ecological public organization "Green Patrol" took part in the environmental charity action in the Koban Gorge.

The action was organized by the North-Ossetian branch of the Open Joint-Stock Company (OJSC) "RusHydro". All the participants were provided with overalls and equipment for the job.

In total, more than 50 children and adolescents were involved in cleaning the recreation places in the picturesque valley along the Gizeldon River; for several hours of work, volunteers managed to collect several dozens of bags with garbage. The covered a 3-kilometre section of the coast - from the Gizeldon HPP (Hydraulic Power Plant) to the northern outskirt of the village of Coban. At the end of the event, a picnic was organized for the kids; they received commemorative medals and gifts.

Ekaterina Begletsova, a participant of the action, explained that she had spent the summer together with her peers in the "Green Patrol", and her new travel was associated with a desire to restore order and care for the environment.

"We always work voluntarily, willing to clean our city, because many people, without noting it, litter the neighbourhood and beautiful places. This work brings us satisfaction; we feel its results," she said.

The office of the "RusHydro" said that the project "Protect!" is implemented in 20 regions of Russia; and for the first time such action was held at the Nizhny Novgorod HPP in 2005. The main goal of the project is to promote among the youth their social activism, environmental philosophy and skills of careful attitude to water bodies and coastal areas, and interest and love for the environment.
