NAC: major terror act prevented in Kabardino-Balkaria

As reported by the Information Centre of the National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC), in the course of a special operation undertaken in Kabardino-Balkaria a major terror act was prevented, which had been aimed against special units deployed in the Elbrus District.

"The Department for Kabardino-Balkaria of the Russian FSB had received operative information about preparation by the bandit underground, active in the territory of the republic, of a huge terror act – an attack on soldiers of the interior troops of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA)," reads the NAC's statement.

In the process of checking the information, on October 6, in an apartment of a high-rise apartment house in Baksanskaya Street of the city of Tyrnyauz, four suspected militants were found and blocked. The area was cordoned off by special forces; and civilians were evacuated. By means of a speakerphone, the militants were offered to surrender; however, automatic fire was opened in response.

"As a result of the armed clash, all the criminals were neutralized. At present, the active phase of the special operation is over. Explosive specialists are inspecting the premises. The number and persons of bandits are identified. The work is complicated by the fact that a fire broke out in the apartment during the special operation, which caused a series of explosions of the improvised explosive devices (IEDs) present there," the NAC has explained.

Nobody has suffered among civilians and law enforcers involved in the special operation.
