A film about Natalia Estemirova “Who Killed Natasha?” shown in St. Petersburg

A commemoration meeting devoted to human rights activist Natalia Estemirova timed to the second anniversary of her murder passed off on July, 14, in St. Petersburg. During the meeting a film “Who Killed Natasha?” shot by journalist Milain Soluis on the order of French TV was first shown in Russia.

“It was a very good meeting, the house was packed, there were not even enough seats in HRC “Memorial”, Ekaterina Sokirianskaya, human rights activist from “Memorial”, said. – We organized two shows, the second one was later, meant for young people who came after work”.

A report on the process of investigation of Natalia Estemirova’s murder was also presented at the commemoration meeting. On July, 14, it was presented in Moscow, too.

Elena Vilenskaya, leader of the organization “House of Peace and Non-violence”, emphasized with regret that she did not feel the journalists’ presence at the meeting. ”I had an impression that they were not there at all, Elena Vilenskaya continues. – I generally think many people do not care a bit of what is going on in Chechnya. People are not aware of the situation, they think Chechnya is very far away and it is none of their business”.

Nina Katerli, writer, publicist and human right activist, said that the commemoration meeting devoted to Natalia Estemirova helped her realize that everyone involved in human rights activities should be just the kind of person like Natasha Estemirova: “Be afraid of nothing and always speak the truth”.

Nikolay Rybakov, Deputy Chairman of Petersburg branch of “Yabloko” party, considers it necessary to familiarize the public at large with the contents of the film: “We are planning to get a permission of a public show of the film from its authors. The film should be delivered to the public at large, in particular, the young people, in order to awaken their civil self-consciousness, for many people do not even know anything about it”.
