Georgian ecologists came out in opposition to building Namakhvan hydropower station

In connection with erection of Namakhvan cascade of hydropower stations in Racha-Lechkhumi, “The Green Movement of Georgia – Friends of the Earth” issued a special statement calling to stop construction of these energetics objects.

The ecologists consider building such a great cascade of hydropower stations as Namakhvan station intolerable, especially “in such a highland, avalanche-hazardous and seismic district as Racha-Lechkhumi which, in addition, is rich in unique karst caves, cultural and natural memorials, a unique ecosystem which are on the edge of disappearance of endemic kinds of flora and fauna”, the movement’s statement runs.

The construction project of Namakhvan hydropower station includes flooding 14 settlements. Investments of 850 million euro are planned within the framework of the project. The hydropower station will produce 2,5 billion kilowatt energy per hour, its power will make 450 megawatt.

The organization calls for the Government, politicians and representatives of municipalities to be guided not with a possible economic effect but the interest of the present generation and the future ones.

The ecologists refer to point three, clause 37 of the Constitution of Georgia which runs that everyone is obliged to take care of nature and cultural environment, “Business Georgia” reports.

At the same time “The Green Movement of Georgia” objected to- building such big hydropower stations in the country as Khudon power station in Oni, “Georgia Online” reports.
