“The New Rights” in Georgia explain singing an agreement with the ruling party by the necessity of compromising

Among the points of the agreement on electoral issues signed by the ruling party with several oppositional parties of Georgia there is an increase of the number of seats in Parliament from 150 to 190 along with the increase of the portion of deputies elected on the basis of party lists and paying off one million lari to each party which overcomes the 5% barrier at the parliamentary election. “The New Rights” consider these points the most significant ones.

According to the documents signed the parties of the negotiation also agreed that the two electoral districts would be integrated with two larger electoral districts. Checking the voting lists will be entrusted to a committee that will be headed by a representative of an oppositional party. Besides, an international monitoring of mass media and implementation of management reserves during the election is enacted.

“What the ruling party offered is quite different from what we had demanded. But none of us, parties forming the “octad”, had any illusions that the authorities would agree with all our initiatives. Part of our demands was granted, the other part was not”, Manana Nachkebia, one of the leaders of “The New Rights”, said to the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.

“In fact, we achieved a compromise on the majority of points. Only an insignificant part of points remained the way the ruling party initially suggested”, Nachkebia said.

“The New Rights” first of all emphasize that although the ruling party ignored the “octad’s” opinion of inadmissibility of increasing the number of seats in Parliament it took into consideration another demand of the opposition, i.e. an increase of the number of deputies elected on the basis of party lists.
