South Ossetia bans imports of fresh vegetables from EU

The South-Ossetian leadership has banned the import of vegetables from the European Union (EU) countries to the territory of the republic. The decision has to do with the hazardous intestinal infection spread in Europe.

The infection, which killed 17 people in Germany and one in Sweden, is caused by the so-called Escherichia coli bacteria.

"This measure should protect the population of South Ossetia from consumption of imported vegetables. The ban on importing fresh vegetables from the EU was also introduced by Russia, until the source of infection is identified," said Marina Kochieva, chief sanitary doctor of South Ossetia.

The head of the committee also pointed to the need of observance of the ban on the import of vegetables produced in the EU also from Georgia, the "Res" reports.
