Einullah Fatullaev plans to continue his journalism

The Azerbaijani journalist Einullah Fatullaev, who spent over 4 years in prison, and who was released on May 26, intends to continue his professional activities.

"From the moment I got outside the prison gate I started thinking about continuation of my journalism. We have a wonderful profession; and the solidarity displayed by my colleagues during my imprisonment has once again convinced me of it. We, journalists, are linked by such ties like freedom and solidarity, which no government is ever able to break," Fatullaev told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"Of course, I'd very much like to go on with my journalistic profession, but, unfortunately, it depends not only on me," he added.

According to the journalist, he remains a supporter of the independent critical press, which is called to serve the society. Fatullaev may also resume his newspapers "Real Azerbaijan" and "Gyundelik Azerbaijan" (Daily Azerbaijan).

"If it proves impossible, and if I feel any threat to my safety and life, then, I'll have to leave the country. But I hope it won't be the case. This is the most unfortunate way for me," said Fatullaev.

When asked whether he would like to go in for blogging, the journalist replied that he would rather "engage in traditional journalism"; and his "favourite genre is the investigative journalism." "But if the government prevents, then, I'll have to turn to social journalism," said Fatullaev.

He treats his liberation as "restoration of justice, albeit belated." In his view, it has become possible thanks to dedicated support of international organizations. The Azerbaijani journalist thanked them for it, calling "the efforts of Rebecca Vincent from 'Article-19' an example of selfless work of Western rights defenders."

"I was impressed and shocked when I saw a photo, where the expectant mother Rebecca Vincent was actively participated in the rally in my support with a megaphone in hand in front of the Azerbaijani Embassy in London. This is an example of selflessness, from which we must take lessons," said Fatullaev.

According to his story, thanks to the active work unleashed by international human rights and journalists' organizations, he received thousands of letters from all over the world. "This was a great moral support, and it gives strength," said Fatullaev.
