Volgograd archaeologists reconstruct image of Sarmatian warrior

Archaeologists from Volgograd have detected, during their expedition, a burial of a Sarmatian mercenary, which was presented by a complete set of his arms. This allowed the researchers to reconstruct the appearance of an ancient warrior.

"Thanks to the fact that the location of articles in the tomb exactly corresponded to their place in the combat equipment of the Sarmatian warrior, whom we detected, we can reconstruct, with sufficient accuracy, the accoutrements of a Sarmatian warrior," Professor Vladislav Mamontov, Candidate of History and head of the club "Legend", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, presenting the work of his pupil.

The Volgograd researchers hypothesized that this Sarmatian warrior was dressed in tight trousers, especially convenient when riding a horse. The trousers were tucked into soft half-boots, tightly tied criss-cross with leather laces. His short jupe could be fastened with wooden buttons. His sleeves, cuffs and chest were abundantly decorated with golden stamped plaques. The jupe (kaftan) was girded with a wide leather belt, to which a bronze cap, a whetstone with a gold clip and a bronze ring, through which a suspended small belt was passed to secure a dagger at his side were hanging by means of narrow leather strips.
