"Rosstat": according to 2010 census, NCFD has highest Russia's population growth

The regions of the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD) showed the greatest increase in population in the period from 2002 to 2010. As indicated in the preliminary results of Census-2010, published by the "Rosstat" (Russian Federal State Statistic Service), the number of residents here has increased up to 9.49 million, or by 6.3 percent under the overall decline of the population of the Russian Federation within this period by 1.6 percent (by 2.2 million).

Let us remind you that the all-Russian census was held on October 14-25, 2010. According to the "Rosstat", about 68,000 census takers were engaged in the census campaign in the SFD (Southern Federal District) and NCFD.

According to the preliminary, data released by the "Rosstat", in total, they counted 142,905,200 persons permanently living in Russia. As compared with the 2002 census, the population of Russia decreased from 145,166,700 down to the above figure, by 2.2 million (by 1.6 percent). The reduction was due to natural loss of population (excess of deaths over births) at the background of the net migration increment within the inter-census period, the "Rossiyskaya Gazeta" writes.

Russia remains a highly urbanized country: the share of the urban population in 2010 was 73.7 percent against 73.3 percent in 2002.

According to the 2010 census, the characteristic for the Russian population significant excess of women over men remained and made 10,515,000 persons against 9,956,000 persons in 2002. The ratio of men and women is slightly worse due to the high men's premature mortality.
