Experts on the Caucasus in Moscow discussed the "Сherkessian question"

On March, 24, experts on the Caucasus in Moscow discussed the historic past of the Сherkessians and their today's problems at a conference "The Сherkessian question": historic memory, historiographic discourse, political strategies".

The "Caucasian Knot" has already reported that according to the organizers of the conference, its purpose was to form an expert platform for discussing the problematics connected with mass outcome of the peoples of Northern Caucasus to Ottoman Empire in XIX century, forms of historic memory of this tragedy and political strategies exploiting this memory.

Mikhail Volkhonsky, senior staff scientist of Research Center for Caucasian Problems and Regional Safety of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, delivered a report "Muhajirun movement in the context of imperial borderzone". He described the events that took place in the middle of XIX century between Russian and Ottoman Empires. Vladimir Bobrovnikov, specialist on Caucasian history, presented his research "Сherkessian Muhajiruns on the basis of Ottoman sources from Bulgarian archives".

A subject of lively interest was a report delivered by Alexander Cherevishnikov, leading specialist of Scientific Center of Post-Soviet Research of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, "Сherkessian question": political interpretations and strategies" in which he stated that anyone would hardly wish to frustrate the Olympic Games in Sochi reviewing the experience of resistance to Beijing Olympics of summer, 2008.

The theme of suppression of the history of the Adyghes in modern descriptions of Sochi was touched upon in a report of Naima Nefliasheva, senior staff scientist of the Center of Civilizational and Regional Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who has her author's blog at "Caucasian Knot".

The conference was concluded with a report of Samir Khotko, chief staff scientist of Adygea Republican Research Institute of Humanities, "Russia and Сherkessian diasporas: experience and potential of collaboration". The reports were followed by a discussion during which the scientists concerted interaction in their studies of the "Сherkessian question".
