Oppositionist Samson Khachatryan arrested in Armenia

A two-month arrest has been chosen as a freedom restriction measure for Samson Khachatryan, a famous boxer and opposition activist, who was detained on March 13 in Yerevan.

On March 15, the court of general jurisdiction of the prefectures Kentron and Nork-Marash ruled to arrest Samson Khachatryan, detained on suspicion of violent actions against power officials.

Stepan Safaryan, a member of the Board of the "Heritage" Party, has characterized the charge brought against Samson Khachatryan as slander, and the actions of the policemen dressed in civilian clothes - as provocation. According to Mr Safaryan, this is not the first case, when policemen dressed in civilian clothes, organize provocations against opposition activists.

According to Germine Nagdalyan, a member of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, the reason of such arrests should be sought not in the political but the legal domain.
