In Sochi, human rights activist Basmanov demands compensation for moral damage

Human rights activist Sergey Basmanov has filed a lawsuit to the Khosta Court of Sochi, demanding compensation for moral damage, which, as the claimant alleges, was caused to him in the course of administrative proceedings.

On December 31, 2010, at 6-8 p.m., Sergey Basmanov tried to hold, within the campaign "Strategy-31" in defence of Article 31 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, a solo picket, but was detained by a group of militiamen. On January 1 he was released, and on February 7 every administrative proceeding against him was stopped.

"I'm engaged in human rights activities; it looks like I'm doing the same work with law enforcers," said Basmanov. "I respect the laws of the Russian Federation, but all the time official authorities are trying to convert me into an offender. So I decided to go to court and claim compensation for moral damage."

According to his calculation, he demands 51,556 roubles from the Ministry of Finance as compensation, including the royalty of his advocate.
