Investigation into murder of Ingush human rights activist Aushev suspended

The Chief Investigatory Department for the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD) of the Russian Investigatory Committee has suspended the investigation into the murder of the well-known Ingush human rights activist, former owner of the oppositional website "Ingushetia.Org" Maksharip Aushev. His relatives do not agree with this decision.

The fact of suspension was announced on February 3 by Musa Pliev, the lawyer of the victim's family.

According to his story, the investigation was suspended back in last October. But the investigator announced it only now, saying that the case was suspended "for impossibility to identify the persons liable to be indicted."

The lawyer intends to appeal against this decision and seek further investigation, the "Echo of the Caucasus" reports.

"In view of the resonance of the case, inspectors could have appealed to Alexander Bastrykin, head of the Investigatory Committee, and ask him to extend the inquiry term; however, they failed to do it, because they don't want to deal with the case," said Musa Pliev.

Inspector Oleg Tsybulkin, who is running the murder case, refused to comment on his decision, the "Kommersant" newspaper writes.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that last September Magomed-Hadji Aushev, 80, the father of the assassinated human rights activist, said that the murder case of Makshirip Aushev was transferred to a new investigatory team, which is working under the supervision of the President of Russia.
