Brussels: European Parliament holds "Circassian Day"

Today, the European Parliament in Brussels starts the event called "Circassian Day", held for the fifth time already and aimed at discussing the issues of ethno-cultural revival, development and political problems of the Circassian nation and society.

Asker Sokht, leader of the Circassian organization "Adyge Khasse" in Krasnodar, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the topics of the fifth "Circassian Day" in European Parliament are democratization of Turkey and integration of Circassians into Europe.

According to his story, the current status of Circassians in Turkey is similar to that of Russian in Latvia, or, for example, in Turkmenistan. "Now, it's too early to state anything for sure. We should see how the issue will be put there - either it will be an advertising pro-Turkish campaign: everything is OK in Turkey, and this country should be immediately admitted to the EU, or they will really highlight problems and give an objective assessment of the situation," said Mr Sokht.

He himself was unable to attend the events at the European Parliament, but passed his report to the "Circassian Day" on the positive experience of preserving Circassian culture in the Russian Federation.

Ruslan Keshev, head of public organization "Circassian Congress", explained to the "Caucasian Knot" the importance of the topic discussed at the Parliament by the fact that the majority of the Circassian ethnic population live now outside their historical homeland.

Let us also note here that on the occasion of the opening of the "Circassian Day" in Brussels, President of Adygea Aslan Tkhakushinov sent his greeting to the participants, where he called the event to be a sort of presentation of the contemporary Circassian culture.

"Circassians belong to the European family of nations. Confirmations are in the historical path covered by Circassians, and in the principles on which the social life of our people was built and - partially - is built now," the "Yuga.ru" quotes the address.
