Yakobashvili: NATO's resolution will bring new realities into Geneva talks

Georgia has favourably perceived the resolution of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (PA), adopted on November 16 in Warsaw, which supports the Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Some experts and politicians expect that the document will be followed by real actions aimed to change the situation in the region, others are doubtful.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Nino Kalandadze, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, stated that "this resolution is different, by its content and sharpness, from all the previous resolutions passed by the NATO PA."

"The resolution treats the Georgian regions - Abkhazia and Tskhinvali Region (Georgia continues using this name for South Ossetia, - note of the "Caucasian Knot") - as 'occupied regions' of the country," said the deputy minister.

"Right now, the occupation of Georgia has been officially recognized; and it will be possible to force Russia to fulfil its ceasefire obligations and to do it in accordance with the international law," believes Besik Silagadze, head of staff of Abkhazia government of in exile.

"I think that Russia will undertake less threats and provocations. Also, the resolution will bring drop of tension. However, real de-occupation of the country is still very far away," conflictologist Nugzar Durmishidze told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Another conflictologist - Mamuka Areshidze - sticks to the opinion that the resolution of the NATO PA was a surprise for Russia. However, he refrained from forecasts, believing that at the present two upcoming meetings are important for Georgia - the NATO summit in Lisbon and the OSCE summit in Astana.
