In Dagestan, over 1000 come to anti-corruption rally
On November 1, residents of the Tabasaran District, Dagestan, spoke about inaction of law enforcement bodies in combating corruption. A letter was announced at the rally addressing the authorities of Dagestan, North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD) and the Russian Federation and demanding resignation of Nurmagomed Shikhakhmedov, head of the Tabasaran District.
The rally was organized by activists of local intelligentsia and opposition deputies of the district assembly, who had founded a public organization named "Anti-Corruption Committee of Tabasaran District" and dealing with thefts of funds from the local budget.
The rally brought together more than 1000 residents of the district, who spoke about violations of citizens' election rights during the October 10 elections to local representative bodies of the district and other malversations committed by the authorities.
According to the protesters, many criminal cases related to embezzlements have been delivered to investigatory authorities and won in the courts. However, court rulings on damage compensation and return of stolen money are not enforced.
