A Month of children's rights going on in Azerbaijan

A Month of children's rights is going on in Azerbaijan on the initiative of Elmira Suleimanova, the Children's Ombudsman. The Month started on October, 20 and will last till November, 20, in connection with the 21-rst anniversary of accepting the Convention of Children's Rights, Press Service of the Azerbaijani Ombudsman reported.

The main purpose of the Month is protection of children's rights, including their education and health, solving social problems, struggle against drug addiction, drawing the attention of state structures, NGOs and civil society to exposure and solution of the problems of children who have suffered from war, refugees and displaced persons, children deprived of parent wardship.

We will remind that 2009 was declared the "Year of Children's Rights" in Azerbaijan and in the same period, from October, 20, till November, 20, the Month of Children's rights was held, too.

The Month was then held under the slogan "Listen to the children, promote their participation". A contest of journalists' works on the topic "Children's Rights for Everyone" and a competition of children's drawings "Our Rights" were organized during the previous Month, "Trend" reports.

A joint action of the Ministry of Justice and Public Committee for control over the penitentiary system under the Minister of Justice passed off within the framework of Penitentiary Service of Azerbaijan in an approved school.

During a meeting with under age prisoners they were delivered reports on urgent topics, including the ones on struggle against AIDS and drug addiction, quizzes were also held. They were granted presents from the members of the Public Committee, APA reports.

Carrying out round table conferences and training seminars by the staff of Gyanja, Gubinsk, Shekin and Jsalilabad district centers of the Ombudsman's bodies in the country with the support of local executive authorities is being planned during the present Month.

The Ombudsman will submit her advice and suggestions to the respective authority bodies upon the results of the Month.
