Armenian government decides not to amend the Law "On the Language"

At today's parliamentary hearings at the standing commission of the National Assembly of Armenia on science, education, culture, youth and sports on discussing the draft amendments to the Laws "On the Language" and "On General Education", Armen Ashotyan, Minister of Education, said that the government gave up the intention to amend the Law "On the Language".

According to Armen Ashotyan, a few additions will be made only to the Law "On General Education". The Minister has noted that these changes will enable the government to open 11 foreign-language schools - two of them will be private, and the rest of them will be intergovernmental.

According to preliminary information published by Armenian media, the bill will not be put on the agenda of the next session of the National Assembly, as it requires further refinement.

The refusal of the Armenian government to amend the Law "On the Language" is the result of the public pressure, Sergey Minasyan, Deputy Director of the "Caucasus Institute", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"Armenia schools should make the core of education, otherwise we'll be liquidated," Griselda Kazaryan, a well-known public activist in Armenia and the widow of Academician Rafael Kazaryan, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
