Capital of Kalmykia marks its 145th birthday

Today, Elista has started celebrations on the occasion of the 145th anniversary from the foundation date of the city. The celebratory programme includes a festival of national cultures, youth festival "To My Favourite City!", photo exhibitions, inter-regional festival-contest of variety songs "Kind Neighbours-2010" and other events.

"This is a remarkable holiday, which unites all the residents of the capital of Kalmykia, brings joy and fine moods, and charges people with energy and confidence," runs the congratulation of the head of the republic Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.

A small settlement, which appeared in the middle of the 19th century in the middle of Kalmyk steppe, is today a modern and dynamically developing administrative, business and cultural centre of the republic. The Kalmyk capital is a venue of regional and respectable international forums.
