Arutyunyan: Khalafyan died because of policeman's irresponsible actions

In Armenia, Ashot Arutyunyan, former head of the criminal police of Charentsavan, accused of incitement of Vaan Khalafyan, 24, to suicide, said in his evidences that there was no suicide; and Khalafyan's death was a result of irresponsible actions of one of policemen.

"Vaan Khalafyan could not search - in the presence of policemen - a knife in the cabinet, take it and commit suicide. If it were suicide, the knife should have had Vaan's fingerprints; but there's no eligible fingerprint on the knife. This circumstance would have shed light on the real picture of events. There was no suicide. I state here that the citizen's death was a result of irresponsible actions of one of the policemen," Arutyunyan said in his evidence at the trial on August 27.

According to the defendant, the incident took place in his absence. He heard noise coming from the room, where Khalafyan was. When he came in, all the chairs in the room were in a mess: one chair was on the floor, which indicated that there was a fight. A policeman Moris Airapetyan was allegedly holding a knife and told Ashot Arutyunyan that Khalafyan had killed himself with that knife.
