Over 200 prisoners pardoned in Georgia

Today, President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili signed a decree to pardon 211 prisoners. 29 other inmates will have their terms shortened.

The pardon was dated to the Assumption of the Virgin, marked in Georgia on August 28.

As reported at a briefing by Khatun Kalmakhelidze, Minister for Correction, among the 211 released prisoners there are three minors and ten women. All of them will be at large in the near future.

27 other prisoners have their terms halved; two more have other reductions, the "Georgia Online" writes.

  • Rights defenders give number of kidnapped people in Chechnya

    At least 80 residents of Chechnya have been kidnapped after a car with a DUSTUM license plate was set on fire; volunteers have identified the names of a number of them. In the village of Starye Atagi, Urus-Martan District, about 50 members of the Saif-Islam Elmurzaev family, suspected of setting the above car on fire, have been kidnapped; and about 30 people have been kidnapped in the Shali District, the "Memorial" Centre for Human Rights Defence (CHRD)* has reported.
