Gyumri base will add stability to the region, Moscow-Yerevan TV debaters assert

The main topic debated on August 23 at the RIA "Novosti" by the participants of the Moscow-Yerevan TV Bridge "Outcomes of Dmitry Medvedev's visit to Armenia" was the signing of the Russian-Armenia agreement on the rent of the Russian military base in Gyumri till 2044.

Political scientist Alexander Markarov, director of the Armenian branch of the CIS Institute, has emphasized that the Russian base will be a stabilizing factor.
Sergey Minasyan, head of the division of political studies of the Caucasus Institute, developed the idea and said that according to the agreement the Russian troops deployed at the Gyumri base may now act for Armenia should the latter be an aggressor's victim.

Mr Minasyan has categorically rejected any chance of using the Gyumri base against Georgia, having emphasized that the base is aimed at defending the safety of Armenia.
