Georgia: teachers' unions warn about prepared mass lay-offs

The United Free Trade Unions of Education and Science and the League of Education of Georgia expect that in September some 20-25,000 teachers will be dismissed. This was stated by Manana Nikolaishvili, President of the League.

According to Manana Gurchumelidze, chair of the United Trade Unions, all the teachers who run 1-2 lessons per week will be dismissed, same as those who will fail testing. She notes that teachers were notified and warned by the Ministry of Education of Georgia of forthcoming lay-offs due to staff reduction.

Some teachers had already lost work, the newspaper "Resonansi" wrote on July 16; namely, teachers were dismissed in schools Nos. 48, 51, 54, 113, 114, 138 and 175 of Tbilisi.
