TI notes Georgia's progress in combating corruption

On Tuesday, August 17, the Transparency International (TI) published its Corruption Perception Index (CPI). It is noted that Georgia is least corrupted from among all Russia's neighbours.

CPI is defined annually on the basis of experts' polls and researches about spread of corruption among civil servants and politicians in 180 countries.

In 2009, Russia shared the 146th place with Kenya, Zimbabwe and Ukraine. Its index was 2.2 points (3 points is regarded as a critical threshold), by 0.1 points higher than a year ago. According to the report, out of the CIS countries Uzbekistan, Turkmenia, Kirghizia, Tajikistan and Ukraine are coping with corruption worse than Russia, while Azerbaijan. Armenia, Belarus and Kazakhstan are better combatants; Georgia is least corrupted.

"Both citizens of Georgia and the world community agree that the level of everyday corruption in the country has dropped considerably. Nevertheless, concern remains as to corruption at the top level and corruption practice in the judicial system," marks the report as quoted by the "Gazeta.Ru"
