Grozny: ten-day subbotnik lasts for two months already

The broad-scale subbotnik (citizens' volunteer work) started in mid-June and aimed to clean streets of the capital of Chechnya of rubbish and household wastes is not over yet. Some of the sectors, into which Grozny was split, failed to cope with the task to improve and clean the territory, although initially ten days were allocated for cleaning the city streets. The protraction of the event causes residents' bewilderment.

"Serious changes have been made practically all over Grozny; and citizens are positive in perceiving the improvements and thank the authorities for the work performed. Certainly, the process of cleaning and improving the city streets is somewhat too long; however, the final result is an excuse," an employee of the city administration of the Chechen capital told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

However, direct participants of the extended subbotnik and local residents are not so optimistic. "In fact for two months already, instead of doing our main job, we brush streets, mow lawns, paint fences and do other work of communal services. It's high time to put an end to this 'feast of free-of-charge labour' and let people get back to their work," said Humid D., an employee of a local agency.
